Romans 6:1 – Part 2
Romans 6:1
So now we have to understand what sin is, or in this case the “Sin Nature.”
The “Sin Nature” or “Evil Nature” is the actual Adamic nature that imprisoned man in the beginning at the fall of man. This imprisonment is for all time, and to the entirety of the human race. This “sin nature” is the nature that encourages sin.
At Calvary, Jesus Christ severed this yoke and broke its hold on man. However God did let it remain, Powerless and only as a disciplinary measure… When the believer correctly follows Christ, we find that there is no problem, but, if the person yields to any temptation of sin and then tries to overcome it in the flesh, then there are serious consequences to be had.
We all, from the time of Adam and Eve till the second coming of Christ, have evil impulses. The average person does not allow too many of these evil impulses to get out of hand, but they are there nevertheless. And there are some evil impulses that we have no control over. We have all fought them day in and day out with little and even no success…
Within the pages of the Holy Bible we find there is a way for deliverance. One must be a careful reader to follow Paul through this new testament book of Romans to understand the inner workings of man’s personality, but Dear Reader, if you are truly longing for a solution and victory over all of your evil impulses then please stay with me while I walk you through this most wonderful information….
We have come to the question of, “How does God attack sin in the human race?”
First He (God) Justifies the believing sinner. By Justifying the believer I am saying that He removes the guilt and penalty of your sin. Then be bestows a Positive Righteousness, in this case Jesus Christ Himself, so that the Believer will stand Guiltless and Righteous before God’s Law during this life and for all eternity.
Second God Sanctifies the person by breaking the yoke and the sinful nature that indwells in you and then imparts His Divine Nature and freeing the Believer from the power of sin and the sin nature. This enables the individual to live a life pleasing to God. This Happens at the very moment when you put your faith in Jesus Christ and make Him your Lord and Savior.
Now this is actually followed by a process called Continued Sanctification. Why? Because we must continually yield ourselves to the Ministry of the Holy Spirit who eliminates sin from our lives so that we end up where all of the Christian virtues are present.
Third, He will Glorify the Believer when Jesus Christ comes back by transforming his/her physical body so that it is immortal, perfect and free from any indwelling of sin…
Jimmy Swaggart explains it the best so I’ll use his analogy. When the doctor talks about a germ that has infected the body he knows it is there but he has not yet identified it. So there is no way for him to know what kind of antibiotic or medicine to give you to eliminate it. But, when the doctor does figure it out he can say without a shadow of a doubt that this is what we need to remedy this germ and that is what he gives you to eliminate it.
This is the case in our sinful life. Those of us that have not isolated this sinful nature will continue to remain un-victorious over sin. But now that we have read Romans 6 and studied it in much detail we clear this matter up and Isolate this “Sin Nature” and know that we have a cure to gain consistent victory over sin in our lives.
Scripture is very clear about the identity of the sin nature. This nature indwells in all of man when they are born into this world. This is a result of Adam’s Fall. One only has to read the following to know the character of the “Sin Nature”;
Genesis 6:5
New King James Version (NKJV)
5 Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
Romans 3:10-18
New King James Version (NKJV)
10 As it is written:
“There is none righteous, no, not one;
11 There is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God.
12 They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable;
There is none who does good, no, not one.”
13 “Their throat is an open tomb; With their tongues they have practiced deceit”; “The poison of asps is under their lips”;
14 “Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.”
15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood;
16 Destruction and misery are in their ways;
17 And the way of peace they have not known.”
18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”
Galatians 5:19-21
New King James Version (NKJV)
19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

We can now identify through the Holy Bible what this germ in called, “sin nature.” We can also say that this sin nature is identified as the fallen nature received because of Adam’s Fall.
Sadly to say, This nature remains in us even after Jesus Christ has saved us. We learn this from reading 1 John 1:8;
8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
From all of this we learn that God in Salvation severes this yoke and breaks the power of this sin nature over the Believer. But, God leaves this sin nature in us only as a disciplinary measure. let me repeat that, God leaves this sin nature in us only as a disciplinary measure… Now to our benefit, if we refuse the commands of this sin nature to continue in sin by saying “yes” to Jesus Christ, then we glorify God, defeat Satan and grow in spiritual strength and stature. Amen & Amen…
If we are to gain consistent victory over this sin nature we must know 2 things.
1 – What God has done in the inner being with regard to the sin nature.
2 – What adjustments is necessary for us to make in relation to it.
These two things Paul painstakingly brings up and deals with in this 6th Chapter of Romans and we will be studying throughout this Romans Chapter 6 Study.
Paul asks these two questions in Romans 6:1 And Romans 6:14. Lets look at these two verses in a paraphrased format: “What shall we say then? Shall we who are Christians continue to habitually sustain the same relationship with the sin nature like before we were Saved so that God’s Grace might abound, thus forgiving our sins?” and “What then? Shall we continue to commit occasional acts of sin because we are not under the rule of Law, but under the lenient Sceptre of Grace?
Because Paul knew Grace, neither of these two questions occurred to him. These were written by Paul because someone else who had been listening to Paul’s sermon on Grace. This person either did not understand the implication of God’s Grace and lived under the Law or by some of the Judaizers who were not in agreement with Paul concerning the great Gospel of Grace or what we call the New Covenant.
To finish up I want you to understand that the key to understanding Romans Chapter 6 is the definite article which precedes the word “Sin” of verse 1 in the Greek Text. In effect it says “The Sin”
If we take a moment to look back at Romans 5:21 we can see in that verse that sin is looked at as reigning like a king. It is very clear that this reference is to the sinful nature and not the acts of sin. Therefore in verse one this sinful nature is spoken of and throughout this sixth chapter where this word occurs.
So in this first verse Paul asks the question, “What shall we say then?” and in doing so he is referring back to Romans 5:20, “Where sin abounded Grace did much more abound.”
In light of this statement by Paul during his sermon or teaching someone more than likely asked the following; “Paul, are you saying that God is willing to forgive sin as fast as man can commit sin? If that is the case, are we who are Christians to continue to sustain the same relationship to the evil nature like we did before we were saved thus allowing God to forgive us of those sins and displaying His Grace?”
Now, in the verses 2 – 14 we will look at the relationship of the sinful nature to the Christian, Thus teaching us how to live for God.
